Choosing the Right Freight Forwarding Option
Freight costs can have a significant impact on a product's landed cost and overall margin. Selecting the right freight forwarding solution is therefore an important part of managing a competitive supply chain. The most common freight options are groupage (consolidated freight), direct road transport, sea freight, and air freight. Each offers different advantages depending on urgency, shipment size, and budget.
Groupage (Consolidated Freight)
For non-urgent shipments, groupage is often the most cost-effective option. Multiple consignments from different customers are combined into a shared trailer or container, allowing transport costs to be spread across several shipments. Typical door-to-door transit times between Ireland and countries such as Germany or the Netherlands are often around 7-10 working days, although efficient connections and minimal delays can shorten this considerably.
When selecting a carrier, it's important not to rely solely on existing arrangements. Rates can vary significantly between freight forwarders depending on their network strength, depot locations, and volumes in specific regions. Comparing several providers can often generate meaningful savings. It is also worthwhile comparing supplier shipping quotes against your own freight rates. Direct Road Transport

Unlike groupage, where freight passes through consolidation hubs, shipments move more directly through the carrier's network. This option can be used for single pallets, multiple pallets, part-loads, or dedicated vehicles, depending on the customer's requirements.
Forwarders typically source available capacity through their own fleet or partner networks, allowing even relatively small consignments to benefit from a faster service. Transit times between many European locations and Ireland are often around 2-4 days, although this will vary by route and carrier. While direct road transport generally costs more than groupage, it offers several advantages:

Air Freight

In many cases, next-day or two-day delivery can be achieved, although weather conditions, flight disruptions, and industrial action can occasionally cause delays.
